Lately I've been really feeling like I need to give up my diet pop addiction. If I'm being honest, I probably drink 36 ounces each day (much, much more if I go out to lunch). I don't think it is so much about the caffeine, although I never drink it after lunch. It is more about the bubbles and the flavor. I do drink quite a bit of water but I think food tastes so much better when washed down with a little bubbly. It has become very clear to me though that diet pop is basically just chemicals, some of which are probably harmful to my body.
Have you ever given up pop? I've tried to cold turkey it but that didn't last long. What would some reasonable substitutions be? Can I mix Crystal Light in club soda? Or is the carbonation just as bad as the chemicals? Insight?

I swear I give up pop at least once a year, and take it up again in the same way. I agree - there is nothing like it with food. I've kind of come to accepting the fact that I probably won't give it up. I replace diet sierra mist sometimes (better for my teeth since its clear) and drink beer at night instead of pop (because, yum) and then just don't have DC in the house, ever. Good luck!
Andy just did this, I mentioned your post to him so he can tell you how he did it.
I am similarly afflicted when it comes to diet pop. You may remember I gave pop up for lent, which I've never been able to do before. It was really really hard to do at first, but since I had an excuse, such as "it's for lent" I was able to do it easier than just giving it up out of the blue. I have since starting drinking it again, but at the rate of say, one can per day, as opposed to two or three. I bet you can do it, you seem to have more willpower than me.
As a recovered Diet DrPepper & DrCoke addict, I know what you mean. I thought I was doing a good thing avoiding the sugar...I had no idea that it was so loaded with salt (plus the chemicals) and my love of salt was a big part of it. I weaned off it using club soda/Perrier mixing it with cranberry juice. But still indulge sometimes and literally could kick back likely 4L of the icy bubbly goodness if I'm not careful!! Good luck! Read enough articles on the risks of aspartame and it might scare you off the stuff cold turkey :)
36 Ounces! You are a light weight! I too love the deliciousness of a bubbly, cold soda - especially fountain drinks. I cannot excercise the necessary control to quit my addiction - however I do find that carbonated H2Oh's provide some bubbly relief (check out the ingredients and there is nothing bad for you). I know that you say you don't like the taste, but give them a try and I assure you that they will grow on you :-)
I actually gave up pop in high school, but eventually went back to it. I had to give up caffeine a few years ago, and it's hard to find a diet non-caffeine soda when going out to lunch/dinner. Now I try to only have one pop a day and it's usually in the afternoon when I am bored at work. Water does get really, really boring.
I've been thinking about giving it up too, I think I wouldn't have so many hi and low spots (energy wise) in my days. I hate the control it has on me or HAVING to have a soda before 9am or a headache is an absolute. Good luck, let us know how it goes!
